Old town

Taking a drive through

old town

light and dark

sides

it is what has grown inside you

that made you

you

remember growing up with all those

childish

clowns?

it was their childishness

making all those jokes

about you with that

ridiculous

asinine

laughing cackling sound

they were young

children

undone

adolescents

unsung

more than kinda’

dumb

teenyboppers

made you numb

but now you’re

grown up

a

woman or man

you found out

what happened

was much different

than you planned

reminisce

about the juvenile you used to be

try

better yet

go there again

visiting you in the past in your mind’s

eye

cry

sigh

ponder why

in a child’s eye

you became the way

you once were

pet your cat

when it purrs

time grows nigh

you used to get high

young adults do what they do

no surprise

you have a town

that comes through you

it’s down in your skin

akin

drive through the

old town drive through

double lanes

over the middle line

begin

misery and pain

nothing to gain

everything’s fine

stay the same

in that endless time traveler’s game

ruminating gets lame

loneliness through time tames

a treasured secret name

given you

by

who

never made fame

unlike all others

you blame

just the same

those who came

before you

know that there’s someone

you never suspected

who always adored you

even looked up to you

with respect

if you knew who

it would’ve

floored you

they were too afraid

to hand deliver that message

facing you

embracing you

revealing how they felt

in spades

long days past

it’s

about that person you are just

getting to know

at last…

alas,

It was you all along

the one who’s changed

many things about yourself

are dead and gone

so much so

you are entirely

different as a person

you will always hope it was that

someone searching for you who

knew exactly what you were

worth in gold coin

you always wondered who it

could have been

who it actually was

if there was anyone at all

standing on the sidelines

you never would have known

leaving and going back to

Des Moines as you once did

sometimes you become popular

because you travel incognito

dodging the limelight

riding the torpedo

you may find out

it was one you

would never suspect

you may or may not find

out through your often vain neglect

what was really true

never came

to your ears nor eyes

yet burned like a flame

inside you cry

filtering down into your

swelling mind

no big surprise

not in this lifetime

maybe in the afterlife

when truth comes alive

forsooth

thinking twice

while

eating a bowl of

fried rice

how much you

were loved

by those you

never got to

know

when push comes to shove

were too

shy to approach

you

bashful

john

and timid

sally

doe

who at last

mustered up the

courage to

meekly knock upon

your old door

when you were

long

gone hangin’

out in left field

in a class of your own

at

the

old town

moor
