If you were here

If you were here

we’d reminisce

about the old days

but we’d surely

remember things

differently

like we always did

don’t you think?

at last

recollection

we did not say farewell

you and I

you know

they asked about you

when I was

there

at the gathering

some

twenty years later

because you weren’t

in attendance

what happened to you

no one knows

where do I look

when you vanished

from our lives

that you are not

here anymore

or over there

not even in the thin air

like you once were

standing before us

with all your colors

and fragrance

and many moods

my friend

I’ve wondered

often

what happened to you

was your life

a shipwreck on a beached rock?

a lonesome stroll on a boardwalk pier without end?

did you

cast a painted shadow

on the coffee shop wall

of which we often leaned up against?

did you drift away

to a foreign land

with that stranger

you always dreamt about?

I’ve walked many

avenues

yet

always

the one who

passed me by

on the sidewalk

never was

the you

we once knew

does the lighthouse

still

shine its light on you

in the misty morning?

does the wind

still

blow your hair

in the spring?

does the noonday sun still

tan your skin

as you pale?

time’s passage

turns

new leaves

sour

they drop

and blow away in

the winds of change

to where they

forget

they were once on limbs

alive

fluttering

in a gale

these drifting

leaves scatter

on the ground

to where you

used to stand

and

to where you

rest

they

are

what

thing

sees

you

without

living

eyes
