In the wink of an eye

I had put in a

call to the

great beyond

requesting

a dream

in symbol

and metaphor

for

I wanted to know first hand

what death

was like

to quell my fears

sparing me and mine

(needless extra tears)

without having to go

into this mystical syblime

(because you don’t get a round trip ticket!)

In the wink of an eye

many moons

after my asking

I was in my long

awaited dream

floating

in mid-air

drifting

past

(me and my wife’s)

grave markers

looking down

reading our

name plaques

I plead you

please

forgive me

for

the

macabre

but

at least

my name plate

spelled ‘Steve’

instead of

‘Bob’

not a

surreal

scene

nor

weird

or

hallucination

in my head

it was

more real

than real itself

like laying awake

on a sleepless night

under the warm sheets

of my bed

I knew

both our married bodies

were

under grass

hand in hand

but

my thoughts

at last

were vivid

actually

more at livid

than memories

of my past

I was still the M E

we all have grown to know

a conscious man

regular kind of joe

as

I looked down

while still

suspended in mid air

fully relaxed

reading both our names

with

no concerns or worries on my mind making me care

keeping me sane

I remember

it

clearly

to this day

just the same

it opened a door

of

encouraged hope

which

diminished

my

human

frailties

helping me

cope

with the

day

I know is coming

for us all

some of us

sooner

rather than later

spring

summer

winter

perchance

in

f a l l …
