The Madness of Orchard

This Maddening denial

is by no rule

a narrow door

a long life;

in that it had been shortened

if not by air,

but certainly not by

any forlorn pleasantry

within the bounds of madness of orchard.

it’s through this

that I see

that empty field

of thorns

the mundane madness

of me

and my standing

of floating breath

over the croft horizon

that was so good for a

 barefoot shouldered boy.

he remembered the languor

the first time

on the hill top

looking down

upon the orchard

of orange.

he walked down the

rocky slippery

to the field of full weed

hidden deep

in memory

between trees of

last year’s

fragrant white blossoms

and bees around his head.

as he leaned against peeling citrus

with his small dull pocket knife

he was comforted

in a smaller way protected

within the fruitful bounty of

orange and green sturdy trees.

he could hear trucks

chugging and rolling and watch

the dust rise on the distant

dirt road.

It was in due time

they were coming, carrying

old rusty smudge pots

on stake bed diesels

would be

one by one

into a

of night moon.
