Covered in Grass

covered in grass, steven humphreys, poetry

Lost in a world of words,

tangled emotions

papered up

dreams

I hear my voice

in the walls

After all these years

I

call on you

to

carry me home

covered in grass

which grows over

my shoeless feet

You and I got humbled

by sheer force

it was the greatest

gift of all

once you felt the hit

You no longer

believed in me

from then on

you

believed in you

and the grass

you walked upon

and the birds flying

wind

sun

sky

clouds

cats

dogs

abound

arriving here

untethered

 at the end

of yourself

and all you had left to offer was

you

but, the voices

besides your own

you heard

like I have

you prayed

would be

covered in grass

you walked upon

for the rest of your days

Remember, I once shouted

‘It’s raining green and brown beer bottles!’

and, all the scattered pieces

on my driveway

made me

so damned crazy

my old ghost

rose above me

standing there

drunk as hell

 in those

worn

steel toed

work

boots
