My Little Spade

my little spade, steven humphreys, poetry, prose

A man so small

my little spade

 crossed his own line

into his own right

boarded the boat

rowed into town

on a horse

hitched to a post

he confided

secrets of nature

into my heart

as I drifted

half asleep

flicking my string

@ 12:51 PM

one arm hanging over the side of the bed

night lamp on

I became black and white

like those with whom I

belong

my own kind

turning

black

becoming

white as ghost

into to the air

he jumped

snatching

a leather lace

of unknown origin

slipped

between his claws

My God

I prayed

his game of cat and mouse

teased his hunger

yet

satisfied

his fancy
