Falling from the Top

falling from the top, steven humphreys, poetry, poems, prose, writer, author

Falling from the Top

up through the bottom

and down someone’s

murky throat

upside down

under good graces

funny faces

remember your story

there’s always two sides

if they’d only listen

everyone has lousy advice

yet, who listens to old Bart

what would he know?

the young think

they are goanna

do much better

than the old gen

But, you believe there must be a god

when you are grateful for animals

like the cats and dogs

who’ve chosen you as their

who in the hell decided all this?

couldn’t have been us

could it?

I painted a mural of you

on my

living room wall

your frown

brightens the room

If we all got together

and prayed that god

would come down

and show his face

would he listen to billions of people’s prayers?

or, would he always need just one more

to make a grand total

of one more billion?

as I walk through

all the doors that are shut

that once were opened

in time

to leave this cocoon

into the mystical

remove the angry mask

and show the child

I see through you

I am so afraid

of living

and dying

Oh God

I fear

will peel itself

off the floor

stand upright

and stare
